Do you have a desire to sell more? If yes, this is what I call a problem (not a wish) and the way to solve the problem or improve your situation is to do something about it. If you do nothing thinking that things will get better, well then it is a wish. You may think that every time you try to get better nothing really happens. Well that’s because you won’t let it.
When people ask me, “What do you do?” My elevator answer is, “I make sales people and companies rich.” However, between you and me, I only succeed with the ones that can see themselves getting rich.
See I offer and deliver a lot of excellent information, yet most sales people and managers listen but never implement it. This always bugged me because I take coaching well. So one day in my blog or one of my articles, I mentioned this and someone gave me the answer. And that’s exactly where it was in the book The Answer by John Assaraf & Murray Smith.
John Assaraf’s explains why people don’t implement the process to succeed. His words echoed mine when they said, So here is why you and others don’t take what’s offered (free or paid for) and why you don’t implement what you learn. Why you and others never seem to get ahead. Why bad things always happen to you and those same others. Trite as it sounds; it is all in your head, but very deeply buried within. It’s all about your unconscious outlook.
In my book TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER$ I talk about the parent in you that is full of negative programming - meaning you are always getting unconscious messages from voices within you. These messages hold you back i.e. getting to leaders and developing high level relationships. They are constantly telling you how you’re not supposed to bother people, and how you’re not worthy to be with C-level and senior executives, and other self destructing thoughts that stop you in your tracks. These and other negative comments that were dumped on you as you grew up are housed in your subconscious continually feeding you debilitating thoughts.
These negative messages prevent you from “going high.” They sabotage you and unless you consciously pick it up and change it, you’ll stay low. A perfect example is a professional golfer or any of us for that matter. He or She is having a great round and getting close to the finish and all of a sudden s/he blows it. Why? Negative thoughts start creeping into the conscious mind i.e. “Better be careful” or “I always blow it about this time” or “My dad always said …” The same happens in selling. You know you have to get to the key decision maker, but you stop with your main contact for fear s/he will get upset if you go past her or him. Who’s telling you this - your negative program, that’s who. And as Assaraf says, this is what keeps you from getting rich. You don’t believe you are capable or have the right to be great or rich.
So what does this have to do with sales training? Just this. You know you need it and you seek it out or else you wouldn’t be reading this. But as soon as it comes time to act, i.e. buy a CD or attend a seminar, you balk. You create some rationalizations (negative programming) and you do nothing - keeping the low status quo in tack. Another example that I see is, you buy the CD’s and attend the programs, but you don’t implement the teachings. It’s the same thing. You’re comfortable in your misery.
There is no question that thinking the best will happen is far more uncomfortable than the opposite. You’ve been programmed not to be greedy or to be humble and that’s the way you’ve been all you life. But the only way to get to where you really want to be is to get out of your own way. My psychologist friend calls it “Catch it” - be on the lookout for negative self talk. “Check it” - ask yourself if this is the kind of self talk that will let me go high? “Change it - turn that thought into a positive. Then scold your unconscious for delivering self limiting thoughts to your conscious.
So now go to my website and buy a product or read an article - you’ve got the money and/or the time. But then, do what’s suggested. Find reasons and ways to implement it rather than excuses why it won’t work for you. And you’ll see your sales start to quickly pick-up.
